Oh Moderator, It won't let me change TheJer to Dad in the profile. Please do it through the back door.

Thanks

Dad

I suddenly feel very powerful, now that I have used my administration skills to change your username from "thejer" to "Dad." I am tempted to rename everyone, much the same way that John Belushi renames all the new pledges in Animal House.

A small observation about this forum software: there is no historical preservation of the signatures you've had on previous posts. As soon as you change your signature info, it is instantly attached to all your posts. Sorry, Homer! Nora is here. just an observation.

Oh Admin, Oh Admin...

our doofus father posted a "chit chat" kinda post on my "Grief and Gratefulness" topic, and then I responded to your post that also went off topic and moved both by "splitting" to a "new topic" called "chit chat" after our doofus father created a "Chit Chat" topic by posting a gratitude there. How do I eliminate one of my two newest topics (I don't really care which one, capitalized or not) and get the gratitude post into the correct forum? I don't wish to eliminate my doofus father, or his posts...

"moving" a topic doesn't allow me to stay in the "emelle" forum...

After poking around in the moderation area for a few dozen minutes, I learned that it is impossible to merge topics, so I popped over to Google to see what the PHPBB experts know about this subject.

Looks like you have to wait until the next big release (version 3) of PHPBB, where the ability to merge topics will be part of the package. The other option is for me to do a lot of code modification in the current version (which is version 2) of these forums here, just as I did for the issue about shutting down the registration area. I strongly doubt I'll go this direction.

HI Brett,

Heard A lot about you... dancing, singing, computers.... Boy, you know Emelle. She can TALK!! I'm sitting here with her eating celery and petting Miles.

I want to register "please, oh please, oh please... let me register." I want to join in and comment.. complain, nag... whatever comes to my fancy on your blog.

I'm a blog virgin... don't tell anybody. Maybe they won't notice. Embarassed

Like the glasses, even though you don't OWN THEM????

By the way, my name is JEN... maybe you've heard of me... just a little... maybe? I got Emelle her job on Mad Men.

I'll know when I'm allowed to register when you tell me on your forum...

Blog to you soon,
JEN

I was really bored one day, so I went to LensCrafters with my camera and took a bunch of self-portraits in lots of different glasses frames. Then I created a photo album where my friends and family could see them all and tell me which ones looked best on me. The frames you see in my avatar are the ones that I'd probably choose if I needed my vision corrected.

In other news, registrations are open while I sleep, and if Jen registers, I'll close down the signup section when I awake. Get in while you can!

Ah, if only this were still true. On Friday, two more of my lovely Mad Men galfriends told me they'd been reading and wanted to post replies but couldn't because registrations were closed. If you'd let in Eve and Kyle over the weekend (yes, Kyle IS a girl), I bet they'd be ever so grateful and send, oh, I dunno, tons o' hugs and kisses your way!

I'll be online plenty this weekend, so if you tell me it's open, I'll ring 'em up so's they can get online too. Or, if you prefer not to POST that it's open and maybe ... gasp!... call me directly to say so, we could have ourselves a lovely chat!

Miss hearing your voice, bro. That's all.

All right, I've re-opened registrations for now.
I will close them once I see that two more people have joined.

Or I will close the registrations in 24 hours, when I see that nobody new is gonna bother to sign up and contribute posts to these forums.

Brett, I love that you're re-opening registrations for my friends, but I worked a 14-hour day yesterday and had a 7:30 a.m. call time today so this is the first time I've been able to blog since Sunday. If you re-open registrations for my friends, and you don't want to post here that it's open because of the potential for spammers (or porn sites), then do me a favor and call me on my cell. I don't care if you call from home or your cell, just leave me a voicemail telling me that it's open... I'll then tell my friends (if I'm on set) or call them (if I'm not) to ask that they register before your cut-off time. I know they'd love to post... but they have no way of requesting that of you personally.

Thank you for this forum and for keeping it (relatively) public. Let me know when you open reg again.

It's still open; I haven't closed it, even though it attracted a spammer. Will be watching the 16-user count very closely to see what I should do next. Tell your pals to get on board ASAP...

So now we see that nobody new is gonna sign up to participate here! Also, when I hide the people who've never posted, we lose several of the "JB-talk" guests who have signed up in the past.

Keep this in mind: it's just you and me, sis.
This website serves two people: you and me.

I wish I knew what that means... but also, I miss being able to see the userlist. Can it be "un-hid" for registered users? At least when registrations are closed?

I see that now... you are so wise, brother-who-has-blogged-for-oh-so-many-years... but I'm glad to be able to keep in touch with you in this way, since I never get to hear your voice.

So now, in case any of my friends (or Cheryl's or Rachel's or Daddy's) want to register, what's the easiest way for them to do that without you having to keep registration open for a week at a time? Is there a way for them to contact you to request it, rather than going through me (or Cheryl or Rachel or Daddy) and then getting too busy to catch the open window?

Hiding the userlist was one tiny correction in the big overhaul I did to prevent spammers from coming to my site (and to get better traffic flow from the search engines). If the spammers get their spammy links into their profiles and onto my memberlist, they can then tell all their spammer friends that my site is vulnerable, and pretty soon, the memberlist is filled with crap.

The good news: it appears that once I made all these changes, I stopped getting phony registrations, which means that I can let the registrations stay open forever and ever. No one has to tell me to re-open the registrations; the registrations are always open.

See how this works? By making the big anti-spammer updates, which includes hiding the userlist, I can now comfortably allow the registrations to stay open -- even though no one else has any desire to join our interaction.

So there's no way to only show the member list to registered users? Bummer.

While the link has been removed -- because of the potential for abuse by spammers -- the page has not been removed. Go look at it, if you want.

http://www.google.com/search?q=lexjb+memberlist

I'm putting a Google link instead of a direct link to the memberlist because what's the point of removing a link on the JBTalk homepage if I'm just going to add that missing link right here? How idiotic do you think I am??

Oh, I need to add that we do have 16 registered users, including Danielle and Jen, but the memberlist only shows users who have graced us with their presence. The zero-post people will stay hidden until they become one-post people. In the eyes of the website software, zero-post people are equal to zero-value spambots.

I see we have 19 registered users... but the link takes me to the index page, not the memberlist page, so I can't see if the two most recent are Eve and Kyle or someone else! (Eve asked me yesterday about registering, since she felt she'd missed the window, so I reminded her and Kyle that they could both get in, probably.)

We reached 20 when I signed in this afternoon.

I'm strongly tempted to close the registrations immediately because the last 3 signups (numbers 18, 19, and 20) were all from the same fake domain (highschoolindex dot com). Those memberships have just been deleted. Tell your buds that they have 24 hours to get in as members because I'm shutting everyone out tomorrow night.
